Macbeth Seating Plan Unveiled

  • Patrick Brown

October 21, 2019 – The Geffen Playhouse today unveiled its seating and stage plan for the June 2020 production of Macbeth, featuring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and directed by Artistic Director Matt Shakman.

“We wanted to do something completely unique, which has never been tried before at the Geffen Playhouse,” says Shakman. “There’s nothing quite like seeing Shakespeare performed in the round and we’re going to great lengths to transform the Gil Cates Theater into an immersive stage experience that will give audiences a 360 degree view of the action.”

How is this being done? The seating in the existing orchestra section will be removed and platforms will be constructed from the edge of the current stage level to the entrance from the lobby. On top of this, risers will be built on all four sides around a new elevated stage in the middle of the theater.

“We also have some special tricks up our sleeves,” adds Shakman. “From trap doors to lifts, to elevated platforms where actors will make dramatic entrances and exits, this is going to be a production of the Scottish Play we hope patrons will talk about for years.”

With fewer seats available because of the new seating plan, Geffen Playhouse has also announced that they will be extending the production of Macbeth through July 26 to accommodate as many patrons as possible.

But for now, only Geffen Playhouse subscribers have access to seats. Current subscribers will be receiving their tickets in the next couple of weeks (and may exchange upon receipt if they wish) and new subscribers are welcome to purchase a fixed 4-play or 7-play package, as well as Create-Your-Own package of 3 or more shows which just went on sale today.

Single ticket buyers will have an opportunity to purchase tickets some time before the New Year.

“It’s an honor to direct the very first Shakespeare play in the history of the Geffen Playhouse,” said Shakman. “We want to make this production as special and memorable as possible for the actors, our subscribers, and every patron who want to experience one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written.”
