Position Summary

The Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles seeks an Artistic Producer/Associate Director to work in conjunction with the Artistic Director, Associate Artistic Director, and Producer to assist in the development and production of plays, work closely with each production team to assess and respond to show needs, and to liaise with visiting directors to provide support and to present notes during rehearsal, tech, and previews, in conjunction with the artistic staff. In addition, there will be an opportunity to direct a play in each season. As we are focused on creating a safe and supportive work environment, this role requires both expertise and keen emotional intelligence in order to juggle a multitude of shows and personalities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work as part of the Artistic Staff to help identify plays for season productions.
  • Attend production meetings, rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and previews (as needed) to participate in the artistic development of productions and provide critical feedback to the creative team.
  • Opportunity to direct one play per season.
  • Assist in producing workshops and readings of Geffen Playhouse commissions and plays developed in-house.
  • Support Producer in identifying and assembling creative and artistic support teams for Geffen Playhouse productions.
  • Research and meet with potential directors, designers, consultants, coaches and other artistic personnel.
  • Support the production process on 7-9 productions per theatrical season (1 calendar year).
  • Work may include travel for play festivals and conferences.
  • Serve as a representative for the artistic staff at meetings (as needed).

Skills & Background

  • Strong background in directing with a minimum of 5 years professional theater experience (or academic equivalent).
  • Previous experience collaborating with an artistic and/or producing staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Compensation

  • $80,000–$85,000 salary plus Directing Fee + benefits
