Position Summary

The Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, CA seeks an Assistant Lighting Supervisor to join the Production Department, starting immediately. The Geffen produces in two theaters, the mainstage Gil Cates Theater (LORT B) and studio space Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater (LORT D). This position will be second in command of the lighting department, responsible for helping translate the plots, plans, and paperwork from lighting and projection designers to create fully working systems onstage. In addition to the Geffen’s regular production season, this position will also provide support as needed for events as directed. This position reports to the Lighting & Projection Supervisor and the Production Manager.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist the Lighting & Projection Supervisor in the installation, maintenance, and load out of all lighting systems, including leading a crew as large as 8-10 technicians.
  • Supervise installation and focus crews for all Geffen productions.
  • Maintain all Geffen-owned equipment and inventories, including documentation to be shared with visiting designers.
  • Assist the Lighting & Projection Supervisor with preparing and bidding rental packages.
  • Assist in preparing all show operation paperwork, including channel hookups, instrument schedules, and show operation procedures.
  • Support the scenery and property departments for any set electrics that require wiring, wireless dimming, or other forms of electricity.
  • Work alongside the Facilities Department as needed to maintain the building’s architectural lighting systems.
  • Fill in for the Lighting & Projection Supervisor in their absence.
  • Fill in for Board Ops and Programmers in their absence.
  • Liaise with design teams and stage managers, as well as Production Department staff throughout the production process.
  • Follow the Geffen’s safety protocol and policies, and ensure the same of any overhire crew.
  • Reflect a commitment to the Geffen’s Mission and DEI Statement.

Skills & Background

  • Extensive knowledge of standard theatrical production practices.
  • Expert knowledge of theatrical lighting systems, equipment, and practices.
  • Experience with programming and operating the ETC EOS Family consoles required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in professional non-profit or commercial theater companies.
  • Proficient with Vectorworks, Lightwright, and Office (or comparable productivity suite).
  • Experience with projection systems and equipment, including video playback software such as Q-Lab, WatchOut, and/or Isadora a plus.
  • Capable experience in computer networking for theatrical applications.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be comfortable working on ladders and in personnel or scissor lifts at heights up to 30’.

  • $26.50-$28.50 per hour + benefits; eligible for overtime
