Position Summary

Geffen Playhouse seeks a self-motivated individual for the role of Stage Supervisor (Crew Lead) for its 2023/2024 Season. The Stage Supervisor plays a pivotal role in ensuring the successful execution of theatrical productions and special events by coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the stage during technical rehearsals and performance runs. The Stage Supervisor is responsible for communicating show and crew needs, collecting and addressing show notes related to tech elements, and supervising all show personnel and assets in conjunction with stage management. In addition, the Stage Supervisor supports the production department during pre-production in the construction and installation of show elements, and the maintenance of show elements during the performance. As a representative of the Geffen Playhouse, the Stage Supervisor assumes the role of Safety Monitor.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assume the role of Stage Supervisor for all shows produced in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater and/or Gil Cates Theater for the 2023/2024 Geffen Playhouse Season.
  • Will be part of the deck crew for each show and special events; learning all show positions for each performance.
  • Responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely movement, maintenance, storage management, and organization of all tech related elements during tech rehearsal and performances.
  • Supervises show crew during tech rehearsals and performances. This includes managing and communicating any crew schedule changes or needs, liaising between stage management and Production Department as necessary.
  • Ensure all technical elements are properly integrated and executed according to the director’s vision and cues.
  • Assist in the coordination of all stage-related activities, including set changes, props placement, and scene transitions, to ensure smooth and timely execution during performances and rehearsals.
  • Attend rehearsals, designer runs, and production meetings as needed to become familiar with the production’s technical needs.
  • Reports notes and conveys necessary information to stage management regarding changes.
  • Oversee the proper use of equipment and machinery by crew. Prioritizing the safety of cast, crew, and audience members by adhering to safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Address any unforeseen challenges that arise during tech rehearsals or performances, making quick decisions to ensure the production runs smoothly without disruptions.
  • Participate in set construction and rigging activities, ensuring that sets are built safely and efficiently and meet artistic requirements.
  • Have a clear and basic understanding of how set pieces and other technical aspects of the production (lights, sound, automation, etc.) are integrated and are meant to function within the space.
  • Assist production team in maintaining inventory of tech assets (tools, supplies, etc.) and assume responsibility of keeping track and purchasing of show consumables.

Skills & Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theater Production, Technical Theater, Carpentry or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Hands-on experience in theater production, including set construction, lighting, sound, and rigging.
  • Familiarity with theater equipment and technology, including rigging mechanisms, lighting consoles, and sound systems.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple technical elements.
  • Effective problem-solving abilities, especially in high pressure situations.
  • Ability effectively communicate and collaborate with creative, technical and production teams.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to evolving needs and schedules.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations related to theater productions.
