Geffen Playhouse is a non-profit, professional theater dedicated to enriching the cultural life of Los Angeles through plays and educational programs that inform, entertain and inspire.

POSITION SUMMARY

Geffen Playhouse seeks an experienced Teaching Artist to join the Education & Community Engagement team on a part-time basis. Teaching artists will help develop and deliver curriculum and programs that support a range of creative theater arts opportunities designed to support diverse, equitable and inclusive experiences for all. Work with our education and community engagement programs may include Geffen Playhouse Literacy Project, High School Partnerships Program, Lights Up Community Engagement Program, Veterans Writing and Performance Project, Theater-Making Intensives for Young Adults and other programs as assigned. Teaching Artists report to the Director of Education & Community Engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Facilitating and/or guiding theater-making, scene building, monologue writing workshops and other programs for students or community groups
  • Supporting student matinees at the Geffen and delivering pre and post-show sessions to high school students at school locations or virtually over the course of an academic year
  • Supporting pre-show theater information sessions for community engagement partners
  • Collaborating with and co-teaching with other Teaching Artists for various programs
  • Participating in collaborative planning meetings and sessions for classes, workshops and special events
  • Attending professional development workshops designed to support enhanced methods of teaching, learning or engagement practices
  • Performing other duties as assigned

All programs and tasks to be conducted virtually online or in person in accordance with current California, LAUSD & Geffen Playhouse COVID 19 mandates and policies.

SKILLS AND BACKGROUND

  • Knowledgeable about theater, including all aspects of the artistic, historical and cultural contexts
  • Experienced as a professional theater artist and teaching artist
  • Knows or is willing to learn how to co-teach
  • Experienced planner and facilitator of theater programs for people of all ages, abilities, or aspirations
  • Experience working with students, seniors and groups of diverse communities and cultures, including those traditionally underrepresented and underserved
  • Experience teaching secondary grades and enjoys working with teenagers
  • Familiarity with diversity, equity and inclusion practices, initiatives, and program integrations
  • Experience in guiding learners to work creatively with the elements of theatre, as well as conduct theatre games and improvisation activities
  • Experience working, teaching and facilitating programs virtually and in person
  • Outstanding interpersonal, collaborative, written and verbal communication skills
  • Experienced collaborator and flexible team member
  • Responds to all communications (emails, texts, calls) in a timely manner
  • Ability to transport supplies up to 25lbs to various locations
  • Ability to travel to and from school sites and organizations in various communities, including but not limited to: East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Westchester, San Fernando Valley

COMPENSATION

Teaching artists will receive an hourly rate for the planning ($50/hr) and delivery ($60/hr) of sessions.
