Los Angeles (June 20, 2016) – Geffen Playhouse has announced the addition of Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize winning drama, Long Day’s Journey Into Night to its 2016/2017 season. Starring Alfred Molina and Jane Kaczmarek and directed by Jeanie Hackett, the Geffen presents a new production of this American classic.

Running January 31, 2017 through March 19, 2017 in the Gil Cates Theater, the production is part of the third decade of producing world-class theater at the not-for-profit Geffen Playhouse.

Considered O’Neill’s crowning achievement, Long Day’s Journey Into Night is set in 1912 in the Connecticut home of the dysfunctional Tyrone family. The semi-autobiographical piece is the story of an ordinary summer’s day with extraordinary consequences.

Artistic Director Randall Arney said, “We are thrilled to be producing Long Day’s Journey Into Night, arguably Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece. To have Alfred Molina and Jane Kaczmarek starring in this magnificent drama helmed by Jeanie Hackett is truly an embarrassment of riches. For those who know and love the play this promises to be a new, bold interpretation and for those who have never had the pleasure of seeing it, you are in for a heart-rending, breathtaking evening in the theater.”

“From classics like Long Day’s Journey into Night to world premieres like Icebergs, our 16/17 season is an invitation for audiences of all interests and backgrounds to experience theater of the highest quality,” said Executive Director Gil Cates, Jr.

Three-time Tony nominee Alfred Molina has been acting professionally for over 40 years, and is proud to be making his debut at the Geffen. Theatre credits include seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal National Theatre, London's West End and Broadway. Recent theatre includes Red (London, Broadway, Los Angeles), Art (Broadway, Los Angeles), Howard Katz, Fiddler on the Roof (Broadway), Molly Sweeny (New York), The Cherry Orchard and Richard III (Los Angeles). Recent films include Spiderman II, Enchanted April, Frida, An Education, Chocolat, Love is Strange, Secrets in Their Eyes, Breakable You, Headhunter’s Calling, Message From The King, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Recent television includes Show Me a Hero (HBO), Monday Mornings(TNT), Law & Order (NBC), and Feuds (FOX).

A Long Day's Journey Into Night marks Jane Kaczmarek's third starring role on the Geffen Playhouse stage. In 2011 she appeared in In Mother Words, returning the following year to capture a 2012 Ovation nomination for Lead Actress in a Play in the West Coast run of David Lindsay-Abaire's 2011 Tony-nominated play Good People. Best known for her seven year starring role in the Emmy Award winning TV series Malcolm in the Middle, Kaczmarek was nominated for seven consecutive Emmy Awards as well as numerous Golden Globe and SAG awards and has won the American Comedy Award and the Television Critic's Award for two consecutive years, the first woman to ever receive such an honor. On Broadway, she appeared in Lost in Yonkers and on stage in Los Angeles in Kindertransport, for which she received an Ovation Award as well as in the Pulitzer Prize winning Dinner With Friends. For her performance in Raised in Captivity, she won the LA Drama Critics Award.
