Geffen Alum/Friends Rosanna Arquette, Beth Behrs, Edi Gathegi, Glenne Headly, French Stewart and Vanessa Stewart Join the Story Pirates for a Grown-Ups Only After Dark Performance
Monday, January 9, 2012 at 8pm
LOS ANGELES, December 12, 2011 – The Geffen Playhouse Story Pirates are joining forces with some of Geffen’s favorite funny folks for a special celebrity benefit performance of The Story Pirates: After Dark, a sketch musical comedy based on stories written by elementary school kids. Former Geffen artists who will join the Pirates in story, song and the occasional dance include: Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class), Glenne Headly (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), French Stewart (Third Rock from the Sun) and Vanessa Stewart (Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara). In addition, special friends of the Geffen including Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction) and Beth Behrs (Two Broke Girls) will also be participating in the fun-filled evening. This special Story Pirates: After Dark will be performed in the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse on Monday, January 9, at 8:00 p.m. and will include a post-show wine and dessert reception. All proceeds benefit the Geffen Playhouse education and outreach programs.
While the Pirates might be better known for their weekly Flagship shows for kids, once a month they switch up their audience – but not their game. For After Dark, the Pirates take their signature story telling style to grown-up levels, recreating kids’ stories that won't quite land you in the principal's office but are appropriate for a slightly older audience. Described as "Monty Python meets Schoolhouse Rock," After Dark has become a regular event in the Kinross Annex for Westwood LIVE.
The Geffen Playhouse began its Story Pirates partnership in 2009 as a way to expand the resources of the theater's current in-school initiatives. Story Pirates, originally founded in New York in 2003, works to engage students in under- resourced public schools by showing them that their ideas, their words and their stories are important. As such, the cornerstone of the company is the in-school Play/Write Program, a series of creative writing and drama workshops that lead to a musical sketch comedy show acted by professional actors and comedians and comprised entirely of stories written by kids. As a partner of the Geffen Playhouse, Story Pirates recently opened a West Coast branch and now visits over 20 Title I Los Angeles public schools each year in addition to performing for the general public as part of the Geffen Playhouse's Saturday Scene program. Tickets are available by contacting the Geffen Playhouse development department at 310-208-6500, ext.128.
