LA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF ARTS AND CULTURE works to advance the intersection of arts, health, and community well-being. In collaboration with the Department of Public Health, Arts and Culture develops innovative programs and policy recommendations that harness the power of the arts to support healing, resilience, and community connection. These efforts integrate arts and culture into LA County’s health, civic, and social service systems.

Initiatives include the Creative Strategist–Artist in Residence program, the Trauma Prevention Initiative, and Creative Wellbeing, each demonstrating the transformative potential of arts-based approaches in promoting equity, health, and collective care.

THE WALLIS Creative Aging Program has served close to 1000 students since it’s creation in 2019. Courses for older adults (ages 55+) are designed to stimulate creativity, connect to others and encourage students to share their personal stories through creative writing, movement and theater. Sessions are comprised of six weeks of instruction and culminate with a public performance of student’s work. Taught by master teaching artists, classes start several times per year.
