Meet Playwright Bess Wohl

Playwright Bess Wohl is one of today’s most compelling theatrical voices, known for her sharp wit, emotional insight, and inventive storytelling. A Tony Award nominee, she has captivated audiences with acclaimed works like Grand Horizons and Small Mouth Sounds, which explore human connection, ambition, and the complexities of modern life.

Blending humor with surprising theatricality, Wohl creates stories that linger long after the curtain falls. We’re thrilled to welcome Bess back following the Geffen’s 2016 production of her play Barcelona.

Liberation will make its West Coast premiere at Geffen Playhouse on January 27, 2027.

Liberation

JAN 27 – FEB 28, 2027
GIL CATES THEATER

Written by Bess Wohl
Directed by Whitney White
A Co-Production with Berkeley Repertory Theatre & Studio Theatre

Following its smash Pulitzer Prize–winning Broadway run, Liberation makes its West Coast debut with sharp wit, emotional insight, and fearless ambition to challenge the status quo. It’s 1970, somewhere in Ohio: six women gather in a basement gymnasium for a consciousness raising group, determined to shake up their lives and change the world. These meetings quickly become complicated—friendships are tested, alliances shift, the personal becomes political and vice versa, ultimately calling into question the very meaning of freedom itself.

Directed by Tony Award nominee Whitney White, this daring and sharply funny new play explores what it truly means to claim power, both on your own and together, and reminds us that revolution is never simple, but always worth the fight.
