Herb Newsome is excited to be making his Geffen Playhouse debut. Theater credits include A Raisin in the Sun (Fresno City Theater), Macbeth and Richard III (Colorado Shakespeare Festival), Revenge of a King (National Black Theater Festival), Take Me Out (Foothills Theatre Company), Re:Definition (La MaMa E.T.C.), and five August Wilson plays—Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Kuntu Rep) , Jitney (Elmwood Playhouse) The Piano Lesson, Fences, and Radio Golf (Penn State Centre Stage). As a writer he has written and performed in three solo shows In Devil’s Heaven, Break It Down, and Freeman in Paris (Humanities Script Writing Award – Institute of African American Research at UNC-Chapel Hill). His full-length play Revenge of a King, a hip-hop musical based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, has been produced in eight cities across the country as well as the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa.
