A Pacifist Bull Takes Time to Smell the Flowers at Geffen’s Saturday Scene All Attendees Will Receive a Tom Sawyer “Book Club in a Bag” Courtesy of the NEA
LOS ANGELES, November 11, 2009 – The Geffen Playhouse welcomes the award-winning Childsplay Theatre Company back to its Saturday Scene morning line up with Ferdinand the Bull on November 21. Adapted from the 1936 Munro Leaf classic children’s book, Ferdinand the Bull is a Spanish-infused tale that celebrates individuality and non-violence. Meet Ferdinand, an unusual bull who prefers picking flowers to joining the bullfighters in the ring, and Danilo, a young nobleman whose father has big dreams for him as a matador despite his own dreams to be a flamenco dancer. When Ferdinand mistakenly ends up in the bull ring, his opponent is overjoyed to know that this bull isn’t as ferocious as the others. Using dynamic costumes, music and dance, the lively cast of Ferdinand the Bull introduces kids of all ages to Spanish culture while teaching respect for all of our differences.
All families attending Ferdinand the Bull and the following Saturday Scene show Tom Sawyer will receive a Tom Sawyer “Book Club in a Bag” courtesy of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) program THE BIG READ. The program is an NEA initiative designed to revitalize the role of reading in American popular culture. The bag includes a copy of the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, a readers guide, bookmarks and an audio guide featuring Ken Burns, P.J. O'Rourke and Sam Elliot.
Saturday Scene performances are on select Saturday mornings at 11am on the Geffen Playhouse’s main stage and are followed by complimentary snacks donated by Gelson’s Market.
Tickets for individual shows are $15 (children 18 months and younger are admitted free of charge) and subscriptions (which package four or more shows) begin at $48. All tickets for Saturday Scene can be purchased through the Geffen Playhouse box office and online at geffenplayhouse.com.
