Geffen Playhouse Honored With Eight Ovation Nominations

Geffen-Commissioned World Premiere The Quality of Life Garners Six Nominations Including Best Play

LOS ANGELES, September 23, 2008 — The Geffen Playhouse and its productions were honored with eight Ovation nominations at yesterday’s LA Stage Alliance announcement ceremony. Six nominations were presented to Jane Anderson’s The Quality of Life, which was the first produced commission as part of the Geffen Playhouse’s ongoing initiative to develop and produce world premiere plays. The Quality of Life was performed in November of last year in the playhouse’s intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater. Two nominations were presented to Daniel Beaty’s Emergency, which had its west coast premiere at the Geffen Playhouse last spring.

Nearly 400 productions and more than 2,000 individual artists were eligible to compete for these honors on productions performed between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008. The Geffen Playhouse’s complete list of nominations follows:

  • CRICKET S. MYERS – SOUND DESIGN/LARGE THEATRE – EMERGENCY

The Ovation Award ceremony isn’t until November 17, but the Geffen nominees are keeping themselves busy. Daniel Beaty’s newest production Resurrection is currently being performed at Arena Stage in Washington DC, immediately followed by a run at the Hartford Stage in Connecticut. The Geffen Playhouse’s production of The Quality of Life will kick-off the American Conservatory Theater’s (ACT) 08/09 season helmed by Best Director nominee Jane Anderson and featuring Ovation Lead Actor/Actress nominees Dennis Boutsikaris, Laurie Metcalf and JoBeth Williams.
