Patrons Must Recite British Nursery Rhyme at Box Office on November 5
LOS ANGELES, October 28, 2009 — Across the pond, young Brits are taught the refrain “Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder, plot and treason,” to commemorate November 5, 1605 when the infamous Guy Fawkes was foiled in his attempt to blow up Parliament. The day is celebrated throughout England by lighting fireworks and burning Guy Fawkes effigies, but in Los Angeles the day will be celebrated with dramatically discounted tickets for Bill Cain’s new play Equivocation. Each ticket will cost $11.50 reflecting the historical date November 5 or 11/5.
The tale of Equivocation focuses on the events surrounding the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 with a slight twist – in this version, King James commissions William Shakespeare to write the “true history” of the plot. With the alleged conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, taking a leading role in the play, the theater felt it fitting to commemorate the fateful day. As such, any patron who comes to the Geffen’s box office window during business hours (12pm to 6pm) on Thursday, November 5 and recites the first line of the famous poem “Remember, remember the fifth of November ...” can purchase up to two tickets for the discounted price.
Equivocation, which is directed by David Esbjornson, features Patrick J. Adams, Troian Bellisario, Harry Groener, Brian Henderson, Joe Spano and Connor Trinneer. Preview performances begin on November 10, with an official opening night of Wednesday, November 18; the production runs through December 20.
