LOS ANGELES, January 9, 2012 — As two-time Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner tears up the stage in Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins, the Geffen Playhouse welcomes theatergoers to come early and/or stay late. Talk Back Tuesdays – January 17, 24, 31 and February 7, 2012Talk Back Tuesdays give theater lovers with a thirst for deeper conversation a chance to discuss plot, character, themes or any other questions they might have directly with the artists themselves. This stimulating series includes pre-show beverages, compliments of Peet’s Coffee & Tea, as well as a chance to interact with the actors – and the occasional playwright or director – when they come out on stage after the show and take questions from the audience. These thought-provoking evenings are moderated by Geffen Playhouse Education Director Debra Pasquerette.
Girls Night Out – January 19, 2012Everyone knows that girls just wanna have fun, and this Signature Series was designed with that in mind; although of course, gentlemen are welcome to join as well. Grab friends, bring a date and turn your ordinary Thursday evening into a scintillating, one-of-a-kind night out. This post show party will be held at the Geffen Playhouse and will feature "Red Hot Carpet" tips from Pixi beauty artists, a hosted bar featuring Martian Ranch and Vineyard wines, delicious food from Ronen Levy Events, our fun GNO photo booth plus a Pixi beauty take-away gift.
Lounge Fridays – January 27 and February 3, 2012Cultural happy hour meets bon appétit in this enticing way to ease into your weekend. Unwind and enjoy delicious culinary delights provided by West Restaurant & Lounge, served pre-show in the Geffen's lobby from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm with complimentary tray-passed champagne. Join in the fun and launch into your weekend with this festive pre-show series.
Wine Down Sundays – January 15, 22, 29, February 5 and 12, 2012Marvelous ambiance enhances the mood Sunday nights as you cap off your weekend with a varied selection of complimentary wine tastings courtesy of The Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the Geffen’s lobby and classic sounds of Southern California from new media sponsor, 100.3 The Sound.
Kathleen Turner sizzles in Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivinsas the brassy Texan reporter whose liberal journalism skyrocketed her to the national stage. From writing Elvis Presley’s New York Times obituary to becoming the most widely-read self-proclaimed “pain in the ass to whatever powers come to be,” Ivins – often described as a modern-day Mark Twain – made rabid fans and enemies alike with her sharp-tongued humor and unabashed political criticism. Written by twin sisters Margaret Engel and Allison Engel and helmed by acclaimed director and Geffen alum David Esbjornson (Neil Simon's Rose & Walsh and Bill Cain’s Equivocation), this acclaimed production captures the red-headed reporter’s indomitable character by weaving personal anecdotes with her colorful take on national politics.
Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins had its world premiere at the Philadelphia Theatre Company, where Kathleen Turner originated the role. A subsequent production (featuring Barbara Chisholm) was produced by the ZACH Theatre in Austin. The Geffen Playhouse production marks the West Coast premiere.
